Good question! I'd love to answer it.

My name is Murjani Rawls, and I contain multitudes.

I'm a writer, reporter, editor, five-time self-published author, podcast producer, and photojournalist. I write about culture and food at NJ.com and The Star Ledger, and am a senior writer and lead critic at Substream Magazine. I was the inaugural Culture Editor at DraftKings Nation / Vox Media. I was previously a staff writer at The Root, senior editor and writer at Substream Magazine, and senior writer, editor, and podcast producer at The Pop Break. I'm a member of WGA East and a dual member Critics' Choice Association. (got all that?)

In 2020, this blog/newsletter was called capitalizetheB and was created out of a very turbulent time where I was searching for a place to voice my thoughts. So, I created my own. In a time when we as a collective were searching for something (anything really!) to make sense of things constantly breaking down around us. Writing has always been my method of communication, and out of that came a new home.

The media landscape is in complete flux, and journalists have been on the receiving end of losing places to share their passions and craft. I felt it was essential to create a space for all my well-thought-out and unattached ideas on movies, television, theater, current events, and whatever my heart desires. Creativity works best when you let it roam and be curious. That's precisely what I plan to do here, and I'm thankful you would consider joining me on that journey.
